Vi

I switched from vi to XEmacs as my primary editor years ago. However, I still find myself using vim all the time, for many reasons. The biggest is probably that it's much quicker to start up than emacs. Also, you can always depend on having some sort of vi on a system, while emacs is still sort of optional.

Thus, here's my my .vimrc.

Ken Bowen once had a bunch of good vi info on his site, but it has disappeared. Probably because Ken used to be a vi user, but I've got him switched to emacs now too.

ANOTHER PERSPECTIVE: As a person who uses vi exclusively, I hereby declare that emacs is a superior editor. Sure, you can do it all with vi, but who does and why? "When all you've got is a hammer, everything looks like a nail."

Comment on TheOtherTrueEditor:

The argument that "there's always vi on any system" sort of undercuts the motivation for having a .vimrc, though, doesn't it? Unless you have memorized it, I guess. --bjk
